Real-Time Strategy

This is the old-school style where peons or farmers are created to gather resources before they build structures and armies. Four amazing Age Of Empire games are here in total, along with four classic Command & Conquer titles from the golden age. Blizzard's offerings of Warcraft III and Starcraft II are no brainers while Battle for Middle Earth is very hard to obtain anywhere via digital download. Hidden gems such as Warlords Battlecry II and Empires Dawn of the Modern (the continuation of the Empire Earth series') can be dug up at GOG.

While the classic RTS games of old required micro-management of peon units, the arrival of 2006s Company of Heroes put the focus more on organising groups of units and capturing resource points. This proved to be a game-changer and, in RTS games that followed, created a slower pace and a much more tactical approach to controlling the battle. Supreme Commander is more old-school and Conan Unconquered is more of a defense game but with no resource management these tend to follow that general pattern.
