Fantasy RPGs / MMORPGs

Although the gameplay is fairly similar to the hack & slash genre and some of the third person shooters, the real difference that sets these games apart are their fantasy settings and RPG elements. Science-fiction fantasy is also included here in the form of the Mass Effect games, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Technomancer. The Elder Scrolls and The Witcher franchises are king, with the Dragon Age games following up as a close third.

As stated in the blurb this blog is devoted to single-player games but in this category, the games are marketed as multiplayer titles. However, all these games can be fully enjoyed as single-player experiences the vast majority of the time. In fact, if you want to play at your own pace that is exactly what I recommend you do, with joining groups being a possible appealing option in mid to late game. To my knowledge, ,only World of Warcraft (BattleNet) cannot be played through Steam. Notable absences here are Rift (which may be a little out-dated) and Neverwinter which is on my to-do list.
