Although many of these titles allow the player to explore large areas, they are still essentially linear games that are mostly about completing levels rather than exploring huge open worlds. Two notable absences here include two cult classic, Bayonetta and Dark Souls, which turned out to be just a little too hardcore for this reviewer.
With ranged weapons rarely used, hack and slash refers to games that predominantly use melee weapons or fists for combat. Many will incorporate parkour mechanics where climbing, leaping and jumping become an integral part of the process. The acclaimed Assassin's Creed franchise completely dominates. Brotherhood and Revelations are expansions to AC II; Black Flag is the same gen as Syndicate and Unity while Origins and Odyssey are likewise interchangeable.
