The Frankie Parsons 300: Action Platformers

This is a crowded genre of a very high standard that has been divided into two parts. Some could be called Run & Jump with Giana Sisters, Rayman Legends and Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair eschewing the use of fire-arms. Super Meat Boy is more of a speedrunner while Spelunky is the one-of-a-kind here.

With shooting taking a back seat to the hack & slash mechanic, this category eschew a level-based approach and demands that the player uncovers new areas and acquires skills or abilities as you explore in order to progress. Once found, you will then often need to do a little backtracking and maybe further tasks before being able to unlock the area that was previously inaccessible. These games have a lot to do with exploration and discovery.
